What is Accessibility?
What is accessibility? Accessibility for the internet provides the ability for people with certain disabilities and certain individuals without disabilities to be able to scroll through the internet in an alternative way that fits their needs. Accessibility benefits disabilities such as blindness, deafness, muteness, and physical and mental disabilities but also supports people in different stages of life such as old age, or people with whom may have a condition that is not permanent such as an eye injury that needs to heal.
Why Is Accessibility Important?
Why is accessibility important? Without accessibility many individuals in the world who require alternative ways of navigating the internet may not be able to have a job or connect with online socially. At every corner of the world the internet is the foundations for the structure of the world: businesses, schools, hospitals, cell phones, computers, pharmacies, GPS systems, printers, fax machines, ecommerce websites, and many more devices require the use of the internet for society to function. So, for people with disabilities this means they need alternative ways to use the internet differently to be able to stay connected with the world and be able to make a global impact by having equal access to the internet. There is a reported number of six billion internet users worldwide as of 2025 according to a statistic on Statista (Tila, 2026). This shows the vast use of internet usage globally and 1.6 billion people have disabilities globally, so accessibility is important(Gevorkian, 2026).
Accessibility Features to Add to Your Website
Several features to make your website more accessible are by making the words on the website easily readable with more contrast, using simple English, using properly structured headings throughout your document, using keyboard navigation setup on your website, and making buttons and links large enough for people to see and big enough to press.
